LEARN THE ROPES

Hi, there
I apologize for not having posted anything lately. I have not been idle, though.
Anyway, do you know what "learn the ropes" or "know the ropes" mean? Be ready to explain the expression in class next Monday.
Here you are the latest documents we've seen in class:

AN INKLING

In today's post I'm just adding links to the documents from previous lessons. By the way, I think the problem some of you had to open documents from previous entries is solved now. Let me know if that is not the case.

As HOMEWORK you have to complete the activities that you can find  in the photocopies -including the listenigh exercises- and, as usual, find out what the expressions in the title of the each post means. Today's expression is "AN INKLING". Do you have one???

On the other hand, it's high time I prepared the key to the exercises too! I think I'll do it at the weekend.

HOW TO LIVE BEFORE YOU DIE

A commencement speech or commencement address is a speech given to graduating students, generally at a university, although the term is also used for secondary education institutions.
The "commencement" is a ceremony in which degrees or diplomas are conferred upon graduating students. A commencement speech is typically given by a notable figure in the community, during the commencement exercise. The person giving such a speech is known as a commencement speaker. Very commonly, colleges or universities will invite politicians, important citizens, or other noted speakers to come and address the graduating class.

Steve Jobs died on Thursday 6th October 2011, aged 56. His commencement speech at Stanford University has become legendary. If you have not heard it, now you have the opportunity to find out how he thought we should live our life before we die.

Listen to the speech given by Steve Jobs and do the exercises which I have prepared. Before you listen,  read the questions so that you get an idea of what you are going to hear and can make predictions. I suggest that you should listen to one story at a time, because the whole speech is quite long. When you have listened to it as many times as you need, then you can listen to it once again with the transcript.

THE DIE IS CAST

Hello, there!
Yesterday, in class, we had a look at some words that are used to describe groups of animals, remember? And I told you that I would prepare a worksheet so that you can learn some more.
Some years ago, for a course I was doing, I prepared some activities related to the animal world. Some of the activities are TOO easy for you, but since they are "ready already" you can have a try at them and realize how much you  know! The activity ANIMALS IN COMPANY is the one which deals with groups of animals.

IN THE NICK OF TIME

Hello there!

Have you had a good weekend? Maybe I should be a bit more specific: Have you had a RELAXING weekend? BUSY? EXCITING? WONDERFUL? UNBELIEVABLE? FANTASTIC? EVENTFUL? PASSIONATE? INVIGORATING? ...?

A new week is about to start, which means interesting things to learn! Let's be curious and enthusiastic so that we can make the most of it.

I've found out that it is not simple to upload documents to the blog! You can upload images and videos but not documents! At least not using this Blogger application. But I have thought of a way to do it: I'll send the documents to the virtual place where the school web page is hosted and then I'll add a link here. I hope it works!

SELF-CONSCIOUS

Today we will have our second lesson. I'm looking forward to it. My throat is still a bit funny but I hope I won't cough too much.
In today's lesson we will...
- meet our mascot
- revise some of the vocabulary and structures we saw last Monday
- have a look at the curriculum for the advanced level
- watch a video about the importance of listening to English
- look back at some pieces of news from the summer
- and get the first expression of our collection

Your questions, doubts, comments and ideas will be part of the lesson too (and maybe of future lessons!)

I hope we all enjoy ourselves.
