SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD

As we all know, this post is dedicated to Lina, Valentina's two-year-old daughter. Will Lina be a spoilt child? I don't think so. But I don't think her parents will use any rod either! And I hope they don't!
What do you think of this saying? Is it sensible? Is it useful? Is it positive? Will it make life better? happier? ...
Perhaps you prefer the modern version "Spare the rod and save the child.", do you?
